So far, automakers blame electric vehicles poor sales on the bad performance of available batteries, which were so are heavy and bulky that they waste trunk space and limit the potential range. Newly developed battery types could finally make lithium-ion technology practical for the auto industry. This lithium battery type, while highly popular in the electronics and computer worlds, hasnt perfomed so well in the car industry, due to problems with heat and safety.

New approaches use electrodes made from particles of lithium iron phosphate, modified with trace-metals instead of cobalt-oxide. These batteries are unlikely to catch fire, have a much longer lifetime than conventional lithium-ion batteries, experts expect the to last longer than the typical car! Quite a promising technology!
